A 2006 study on stress among information technology workers found that IT was the most stressful profession with 97% of the 3,000 participants saying that their life at work was stressful on a daily basis. I’m not surprised. Having worked in IT for 14 years, I’ve seen it all and things appear to be getting worse. Each wave of technology has been accompanied by a new set of heightened expectations about how our lives will be improved. In our connected world, these expectations have been met just enough to make technology slightly less important than air and water for survival in the 21st century.

To be fair, not all stress is bad. Some stress is a good thing and it drives us to perform. Too much though, and performance degrades rapidly. So what gives? How do you find balance and remove yourself from the stressed out 97%? From tools and tips to mind and body, that’s what calmcomputing is all about. Stay tuned as we explore ways to bring calm to the IT profession.
